The forecast shows severe winter weather in Texas — a winter storm. Every year in January and February here in Texas, we have small apocalypses called winter storms.
2026
Here is a warning and a forecast.

The most “fun” part here is the freeze after the rain. Trees and power lines get covered with ice, which often causes outages and no electricity. Roads also turn icy.
I like this time. I’m waiting for snow, a lot of snow, but we have rain instead.
People buy water, toilet paper, eggs, and milk. This morning, there were no milk and eggs in H-E-B, but in Walmart there were both milk and eggs.

During this kind of weather, people prefer to stay home because the roads are slippery. Schools and universities cancel classes, clinics reschedule appointments, and so on.
2021
The big snow apocalypse happened in February 2021. There was a lot of snow, and because of the freeze, we didn’t have electricity for a few days.

These photos of snowmen are from January 2021. The rest are from February, when we had the most snow.
Since houses in Texas are basically “cardboard” houses, they cool down very fast. Home heating is gas, but the HVAC system still needs electricity. So if there is no electricity, there is no heating.
Outside, the temperature dropped below −10°C (14°F). The temperature inside the house dropped to 5°C (41°F) in one day. We opened the faucets to let the water run — this reduces the chance of pipes freezing and getting damaged.

For a couple of nights, we slept in sleeping bags in the master closet. It has no external walls — rooms are all around it. The temperature in the closet stayed around 11–12°C (52–54°F).

Our son really liked it back then. Even now, he is waiting for snow, strong frost, and a power outage.
When we bought the house, I thought a fireplace in Texas was totally useless. But in the winter of 2021, I really wished we had a fireplace that could be used with wood or coal.
Hopefully, this year we will have electricity.
