My path as a Linux user

My path as a Linux user

I decided to share what Linux distributions I’ve used and how it all started.

ASPLinux was the first Linux distribution I tried in 2003.
I accidentally found a set of ASPLinux disks at my father’s place and decided to try installing it just to see what it was.

I remember using Acronis OS Selector for disk partitioning and as a bootloader. Later I switched to LILO, and then to GRUB.

I absolutely loved KDE 3.5! It was my favorite desktop environment. I remember how disappointed I was when KDE 4 was released.

Here’s my path from ASPLinux to Pop!_OS:

  • ASPLinux
  • ALT Linux
  • Red Hat Linux
  • Mandrake Linux
  • Mandriva Linux
  • openSUSE
  • Knoppix
  • Fedora Linux
  • Debian
  • Ubuntu
  • Pop!_OS

I mostly used Linux for development, usually on my laptop. Honestly, I’m not sure what I did more: configuring Linux or actually doing development 😅

The last distribution I had on my laptop was Pop!_OS. I really like it because everything works almost out of the box, including GPU drivers.

Besides Linux, I also played around with FreeBSD and OpenBSD, and even tried Solaris back in 2004–2005.

At one of my jobs, we had FreeBSD on a server and actively used jails for process isolation in production.

These days, I use macOS for development, and Ubuntu on my personal servers.

What Linux distribution are you using these days?
